A Collaborative Effort for Sustainable Growth

Launched by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) through its Africa Sustainable Finance Hub (ASFH), the “Meet the Tôshikas” program is supported by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan (METI). This collaborative effort aims to foster sustainable growth in Africa by connecting promising tech startups with valuable investment opportunities from Japan.

The program goes beyond simply connecting startups with investors. It provides a comprehensive investment readiness journey, equipping participants with the skills and knowledge needed to successfully attract and manage capital. This includes:

  • Market Insights: Deep dives into the Japanese investment landscape, helping startups understand investor preferences and tailor their pitches accordingly.
  • Pitching and Fundraising Techniques: Workshops and mentorship from experienced professionals refine the startups’ ability to present their businesses in a compelling and impactful manner.
  • Networking Opportunities: The program facilitates connections with potential investors, industry leaders, and other key players in the Japanese market.

Six Promising Finalists Emerge

After a competitive selection process, six exceptional startups from across Africa have been chosen as finalists for the “Meet the Tôshikas” program. These finalists represent the diverse and dynamic landscape of African tech innovation:

  • Angola:
    • Anda: Streamlining the informal moto-taxi sector by formalizing operations and offering financial services to drivers.
    • Mamboo: Leveraging technology to provide quick and convenient food and FMCG deliveries for Angolan consumers.
  • South Africa:
    • Zoie Health: Pioneering advancements in e-health solutions to improve access to quality healthcare in Africa.
    • JobBox: Bridging the gap between university graduates and employers by creating a platform that connects talent with job opportunities.
  • Zambia:
    • Bosso: Making construction simpler and more affordable by building a platform that streamlines the building process and reduces costs.
    • AfriOnline Group: Simplifying daily life with an integrated platform for ordering from restaurants, supermarkets, and wholesalers, all in one place.

A Platform for Growth and Potential

The “Meet the Tôshikas” program culminates in a highly anticipated pitch event, where these finalists will have the opportunity to showcase their businesses to a panel of prominent Japanese investors and industry experts. This event represents a significant opportunity for the startups to:

  • Secure Investment: A successful pitch can translate into vital funding to fuel their growth and expansion plans.
  • Establish Partnerships: Building connections with Japanese industry leaders can open doors to strategic partnerships and valuable market access.
  • Gain Recognition: The program provides a platform for the finalists to gain visibility and recognition within the global investment community.
