Kenyans Win Big at Jacob’s Ladder Africa’s Renewable Energy Challenge
Kenya’s brightest young minds are leading the charge for a sustainable future, thanks to the recent Renewable Energy Innovation Challenge organized by Jacob’s Ladder Africa (JLA) in partnership with the University of Nairobi. Held on March 28th, 2024, the competition saw 24 talented finalists unveil their solutions to tackle climate change and energy access issues in Kenya.

The challenge, part of JLA’s greenLabs Incubation Program, specifically targeted young innovators aged 20-25. Over a month, these young minds honed their ideas, aiming to mitigate climate change and improve energy access in Kenyan communities. The culmination of their efforts arrived at Demo Day, where finalists showcased their projects before a distinguished panel of judges and a captivated audience.
Top Innovations Take Center Stage
After intense competition, the top three projects emerged victorious:
- SunTrack: This ingenious system empowers individuals and businesses to monitor their energy consumption, enabling informed decisions on solar power utilization.
- Umeme Sense: This smart technology tackles energy waste in large buildings and industries by providing real-time monitoring and control of energy use.
- Mobilab: This impactful initiative harnesses solar-powered buses to deliver hands-on STEM education across Kenya, promoting both clean energy and educational equity.

Another project deserving recognition is HyPro Station. This initiative aims to produce green hydrogen, catering to the carbon offset market while addressing community needs like job creation and water access.
Nurturing Young Green Leaders
The impact of the challenge extends far beyond the top three winners. All 24 finalists are offered a valuable opportunity – a nine-month stint in the greenLabs Incubation Program. This program offers crucial support through mentorship, training, and cross-learning opportunities, empowering these young entrepreneurs to refine their projects and turn them into reality.
Karen Chelang’at, JLA’s Chief Innovation Officer, underscored the organization’s commitment to fostering green solutions with the active participation of young Kenyans. The Renewable Energy Innovation Challenge stands as a testament to this commitment, successfully empowering young innovators to address pressing socio-economic issues in Kenya through the power of green technologies.
Professor Mary Kinoti, representing the University of Nairobi, reiterated the university’s dedication to fostering innovation and entrepreneurship. She applauded the collaboration with JLA, viewing it as a powerful tool to tackle the multifaceted challenges faced by Kenya.
